An Illinois Road trip - Menard County
Read MoreCentral Illinois has the reputation of being nothing but corn and soybean fields. While agriculture is a huge part of what is Central Illinois, I would like to invite you to explore Menard County in Central Illinois. Located to the northwest of Springfield, the area is withing the Sangamon River Valley, and for my money, it offers some of the most scenic roads and drives in the state.
Besides the Abraham Lincoln connection, Menard County, and the Petersburg area in particular, is chocked full of Lincoln history, with New Salem close by and the rolling farm ground surrounding the the town is nothing short of spectacular in my mind. There is one farm, I will not identify the location, I challenge you to find it, that is one of the most beautiful farms in Illinois. The farm house is positioned so that to look out the front of the house, you have this expansive view of their pasture which is in a valley and I can only imagine what it must be like to sit on their front porch as the sun sets to the west. Dad used to have a saying, "if that guy had a feather.... we would both be tickled." This is one of those places that I would make that comment about.
If you find it on your travels, let me know what you think. Share a pic with me. I think your reaction will be the same as mine.
